Description:

An autograph from Thomas Hart Benton. Benton, born in North Carolina in 1782, was an attorney, soldier, and politician. He was a longtime U.S. Senator from Missouri serving five terms. Benton was a member of the Democratic party and was in support of U.S. westward expansion. Towards the end of his time in the Senate, Benton declared himself against the institution of slavery. This would put him against the popular opinion in his state and against his political party.
