Autograph of Sarah Josepha Buell Hale. Hale was born in New Hampshire in 1788 and became an activist, writer, and editor of a widely known magazine. She is most notable for the writing of the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and her campaign for the creation of the American holiday “Thanksgiving.”
