Description:
Autograph possibly by William H. Lytle, Union Civil War General. Lytle was born in Ohio in 1826. He was a poet, politician, and a military officer who participated in both the Mexican-American War and American Civil War. During the Civil War, he was the Colonel for the 10th Ohio infantry and with his leadership, he and his brigade were able to repel Confederate forces in Western Virginia which helped to pave the way for statehood in eventually becoming the state of West Virginia. He was severely wounded at one point in his left calf at Carnifex Ferry in 1861 and took leave to recover, however, he returned to lead a brigade the following year. He was wounded and taken as prisoner at the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky on October 8, 1862. Following the prisoner exchange, Lytle rejoined the Army and led another brigade getting involved in various engagements. Lytle was then mortally wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. Lytle Park in Cincinnati, One Lytle Place in Cincinnati, and Lytle Street at 1235 west in Chicago, are named after William Lytle.
