Description:

An autograph from a military officer named Zebulon Montgomery Pike with a backing introducing him. Pike was born in New Jersey in 1779. He was a brigadier general in the U.S. Army who led expeditions through the Louisiana Purchase territory. He initially reconnoitered the Northern reaches of the Mississippi River and he explored territory in Spanish colonial settlements in Texas, New Mexico, and Pikes Peak in Colorado which was named after him. His expeditions coincided with other famous expeditions during Jefferson’s presidency such as the Lewis and Clark expedition and the Red River expedition in 1806. In 1810 he published a book of his accounts of his expeditions which became so popular it was translated into several languages across Europe. He served as a brigadier general during the War of 1812 until he was ultimately killed at the Battle of York outside of the British colonial capital in Upper Canada.
