Description:

This item depicts a letter responding to a previous request for information by Gilbert Stuart McClintock from Edward F. Grier, an associate professor of English and Literature at the University of Kansas. This response is regarding another item in the collection, 11.92a, a letter by Walt Whitman to John. H. Johnston regarding a trip he had previously taken. In this response, Grier mentions to McClintock that he is passing the copy of Whitman’s letter to the correct people, as he is not editing these materials at this time. He goes on to give some context to the letter for McClintock, noting the date and suggesting that Whitman may have been traveling to meet some friends, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. O’Conner. However, Grier continues on that the information is lacking, disallowing a true understanding of the letter in its entirety. Grier suggests the names O’Conner as the addressee “My Friends,” in the original letter by Whitman.
