Description:

This item depicts a letter responding to a previous request for information by Gilbert Stuart McClintock from Edwin Haviland Miller, a professor of English and Literature at Simmons College. This response is regarding another item in the collection, 11.92a, a letter by Walt Whitman to John. H. Johnston regarding a trip he had previously taken. In this response, Miller mentions another item in the collection, 92b, in which the creator of that item, Edward Grier, forwarded McClintock’s queries about Whitman’s original letter. Miller is, at the time, working on compiling a collection of Whitman’s correspondences, including 2500-3000 letters. Miller writes that he is excited to receive a copy of the original letter because it specifically notes when Whitman will be returning and he has never seen this one before. What is interesting is that Miller notes the envelope included with the letter is dated differently from the letter itself, the letter being September 13, 1869 and the envelope dated September 1, 1887. He notes that Whitman’s letters have often been separated and he has been able to make the right connections to put them back together. He concludes by asking McClintock permission to include this letter in his compilation.
