Description:

The following is an autograph of Peter Pypers, 1749-1805 (AKA Pieter Pijpers), a Dutch poet and dramatic writer, addressed to Heer Joannes Willmet, 1750-1835, a Dutch preacher, professor, and Orientalist. Willmet taught Asian languages and culture at the University of Harderwijk from 1794 and at The University of Amsterdam from 1804 until his death. Pypers worked for a merchant and wrote and translated poetry and plays in his free time. This document is likely an autograph that Pypers signed for Willmet, who may have been a fan of his work. The pencil note at the bottom of the document is a wry comment from a previous archivist regarding the “Peter Piper” nursery rhyme.

Transcription:

Den wellaelen Heer Joannes Willmet een geschenk van Peter Pyper [signature] This I suppose to be the “Peter Pyper” who “picked a peck of pickled peppers” [in pencil, from previous archivist]

Translation:
