Description:
The following is a signature from Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice [known as Lord Henry Petty; see other titles], Marquess of Lansdowne, date unknown. The signature is on a yellowing piece of parchment superimposed on a second piece of blue-ish parchment that appears to have archival notes. The notes describe Marquis of Lansdowne as one of the oldest peers along with “Lyndhurst” and “Broughman.” Lord Henry Petty was considered one of the most influential Whig politicians of the time. He worked closely with Henry “Brougham” Brookes and John Copely, Baron Lyndhurst. Lord Henry Petty was born in 1780, Henry Brougham Brookes was born in 1778, and Baron Lyndhurst was born in 1772, and the gentlemen lived to be 82, 89, and 91 years old, respectively. Lord Henry Petty served as Chancellor of the Exchequer (1806-1807), Home Secretary (1827-1828), Lord President of the Council (1830-1834; 1835-1841; 1846-1852), and Leader of the House of Lords (1846-1852).
