Description:

The following item is a royal warrant written from William IV to the Sheriff of Somersetshire, Sir Henry Strachey, 2nd Baronet, on April 5, 1832. The decree authorizes the release of prisoner Luke Burton from Ilchester Gaol[sic.] [Jail]. An Ilchester Gaol register states that Luke Burton was admitted October 17, 1831, at the approximate age of 34. This document was countersigned by several members of parliament: Robert Vernon Smith, Francis Thornhill Baring, and Geo. [George] Ponsonby. This entry contains a second manuscript that documents the statuses of all signees. The Sheriff of Somersetshire, now Somerset, was elected yearly, and the Sheriff in 1832 was Sir Henry Strachey, 2nd Baronet, of Sutton Court, according to the London Gazette.

Whereas the Commissioners of Our Treasury have represented unto Us that Luke Burton is confined in Ilchester Gaol[sic] [Jail] on account of a forfeited Recognizance in the Sum of Twenty Pounds, and Whereas Our said Commissanirs[sic] [Commissioners] have recommended unto Us to remit the amount of the said Recognizance, and to discharge the said Prisoner out of Custody as to his imprisonment in respect thereof, To which we are graciously pleased to condescend Our Will and Pleasure is and We do hereby authorize and Command you to remit the amount of the said Recognizance of Twenty Pounds forfeited by the said Luke Burton, and to discharge the said Luke Burton out of Custody as to his Imprisonment in respect thereof accordingly. And for so doing this shall be your Warrant. Given at Our Court at St. James’s this 5th.. day of April 1832 In the second year of Our Reign.
