Title:
Inter-Parliamentary Conference. Dinner
Description:
The following is a program for an inter-parliamentary dinner at the Crystal Palace on Thursday, July 26th, 1906, chaired by John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll [Marquess of Lorne]. The Inter-Parliamentary Conference, now the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), was the first forum of political negotiations meant to establish international law and arbitrate conflicts. In 1906, the IPU met in London for the 14th conference to debate various topics, though the specifics are lost to time. This program provides a menu of what dishes were offered, various toasts that were provided, and various national anthems that were played. The front cover shows a seal, and the back cover is signed by various figures identified as the following: Sir William Randal Cremer, [John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th] Duke of Argyll, Auguste Marie François Beernaert, James Grant Wilson, Bertha von Suttner, W[illiam]. T[homas]. Stead, E[mma] L[ucy] Stead, John J Wilson, Jane J Wilson, Wayne Davis, W[illiam] J[ennings] Bryan, [Philip Stanhope, 1st Baron] Weardale, Gróf Albert Apponyi, and Alderman Thomas Snape. Several others were listed in the program as offering toasts, such as Herr von Pleuer (Senator of Austria), Paul-Henri-Benjamin Balluet D'Estournelles de Constant, Richard Bartholdt, Moĭseĭ I︠A︡kovlevich Ostrogorskiĭ, possibly Beniamino Pandolfi Guttadauro, and Professor Eikhoff of Germany.
