Description:
The following is a signature of Count Vitaliano Dal Verme, an Italian aristocrat, on the back of what appears to be a bank receipt, date unknown. Count Vitaliano Dal Verme was an avid scientist. He traveled to America to “satisfy his scientific curiosities.” Count Vitaliano Dal Verme was the son of Count Francesco Dal Verme., 1758-1832, an avid traveler who was in close contact with some of the most prolific American names of the time, as shown in his book, Seeing America and its great men; the journal and letters of Count Francesco dal Verme, 1783-1784. Relatedly, John Quincy Adams wrote in his personal diary on February 24, 1830, that Count Vitaliano Dal Verme paid him a visit after having been in the United States for only three or four months and wrote on March 16, 1830, that Count Vitaliano dal Verme was “to take leave.” Vitaliano married Vittoria Cusani Visconti in 1833.
