Description:
The following item is a photograph and signature of Giuseppe Garibaldi from approximately some time between 1869 and 1882. Garibaldi was an Italian general and revolutionary who contributed to the Italian unification. He supported the idea of a democratic republic. Due to his military involvement in Europe and South America, he was considered the “Hero of the Two Worlds” and is presently often referred to as one of Italy’s greatest national heroes. This photograph was taken by Tuminello (likely Lodovico Tuminello). Lodovico Tuminello was a famous Italian painter and photographer, best known for his documentation of the explorations of Orazio Antinori and the Capture of Rome, specifically the beginning of the invasion via the Porta Pia gate in Rome. It appears that this photograph was taken at a studio located at Via Borgognone, N° 82, in Rome, Italy. Following exile, Tuminello returned to Rome in 1869, and Garibaldi died in 1882. This photograph was likely captured in that time frame.
