Description:

The following is an autograph that might have come from Baron C[onstantin Karlovich] Fehleisen (1804-1870), a minor noble whose title originated from Germany, according to the Russian Nobility Association in America. The Baron’s family tree exists, but not much information has been kept regarding his life, due to the political instability in Russia during the time period and the fact that Russian illiteracy was a major problem up until the 1860s. The Baron may have earned his title by being an aristocrat with enough land to be royally titled, or by being endowed with the title by the rulers of Russia. This means he was likely well-educated, literate, and well-off. Although the title of Baron can be hereditary, the Baron earned the title himself, as his father had not earned a title.
