Description:
The following item is half of an exchequer receipt containing the signatures of “Onslow” [likely referring to Thomas Onslow, 1679-1740, Teller of the Receipt of the Exchequer from 1718-1740] and “Halifax” [likely referring to Geroge Montagu [alternatively Montague], 1st Earl of Halifax, 1684-1739, Auditor of the Exchequer from 1714-1739], possibly dated 1730. The contents of the note are unintelligible as they may be a form of clerical shorthand. This document may have been a Teller’s Bill used to document the amount of money paid to the Exchequer. The Teller of the Receipt of the Exchequer would have been responsible for creating the Teller’s Bill, and the Auditor of the Exchequer would have been responsible for filing and auditing the document. George Montagu and Thomas Onslow would have worked in the Office of the Exchequer together from approximately 1718-1739. An Exchequer Bill from 1720 contains the same Halifax signature. Several documents containing the signatures of both Halifax and Onslow are located in an Exchequer Document Collection in the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. [Halifax’s signature matches that of Item 129: Autograph from [George Montagu, 1st Earl of] Halifax, 1720]
