Description:
The following is a signature from Thomas Gage, 1721-1787, a British Army officer, date unknown. Thomas Gage was involved in several conflicts including the War of the Austrian Succession, the Second Jacobite Uprising, the French and Indian War, the Pontiac’s War, and the American War of Independence. Gage was the military Governor of Quebec from 1760-1763, the acting Commander-in-Chief of British Forces of North America from 1763-1775 and the Governor of Massachusetts Bay from 1774-1775. Gage played a role in the implementation of the Intolerable Acts, a series of punitive laws aimed at the colonists involved in the Boston Tea Party and made attempts to seize stores of weapons from the local militias, eventually resulting in the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
