Description:
The following item is a document written in Latin, signed by “Hardwicke” (possibly referring to Philip Yorke, 2nd Earl of Hardwicke, 1720-1790) and “Newcastle” (possibly referring to Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle, 1720-1794) in October of 1786. The note seems to be half of a message or receipt signed by the Earl of Hardwicke, the Duke of Newcastle, and others. The writing is highly stylized with many abbreviations, so the content is difficult to decipher; however, this may be a financial document of some sort. The note seems to be cut in half, with only the right side present, so many of the words are cut off. The back of the note has a message in pencil identifying the Earl and the Duke. It appears that the Earl of Hardwicke, the Duke of Newcastle, and J.R. Marlow worked in the Office of the Exchequer at the same time. The Duke of Newcastle is listed as the auditor, J.R. Marlow is listed as an assistant clerk, and the Earl of Hardwicke is listed as a Teller of the Receipt of the Exchequer. A “J. Kendall” (possibly referring to the name Jon Kendall that is seen at the top of this document) appears to have been a captain in the Royal Navy who was first commissioned on November 24, 1778. The Earl of Hardwicke held the position of Teller of the Receipt of the Exchequer from 1738-1790; and the Duke of Newcastle held the position of Auditor of the Exchequer from 1751-1794.
