Description:

The following item is a note and signature from William Charles Macready (1793-1873), addressed to an unknown recipient on an unknown date. Macready was a well-known English actor that specialized in Shakespeare and was praised by influential writers such as Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Charles Dickens. Macready Theatre in England is named after him and the one-man show Macready! (1979) tells his story. While touring America, Macready encountered Edwin Forrest, an American actor that also specialized in Shakespeare, with whom Macready had a longstanding rivalry. This eventually resulted in the Astor Place Riot, which ended with 22-31 rioters dead, 48 rioters wounded, 50-70 policemen injured, and 141 militiamen injured.
