Description:
The following is a letter from John Sartain to Charles Edmund Dana in which he accepts an invitation to an unspecified event, dated October 28, 1895. John Sartain was an Anglo-American artist, best known for engravings, medallions, and architecture. He served as the director of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women and held that position at the time of the letter. The address used for the correspondence matches the address of what was then the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, where Sartain held various offices. Sartain also held leadership positions in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, which may have led him to meet Dana, who was a trustee at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, which was down the street from the Design School. The event that Sartain was invited to may have been something involving the Philadelphia Sketch Club, a (then) male-only club for visual artists, of which Dana was a member. Sartain’s daughter Emily Sartain (1841-1927) became director of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts like her father, and established the Plastic Club, the female equivalent to the Sketch Club.

Dear Sir
Your favor of yesterday is to hand. I think I can accept your kind invitation for the 13. Prox.a as I am not aware of anything to pre-vent my attendance.
Should anything arise that I do not now know of to make it impossible for me to be present, I will drop you a line to inform you.
Yours truly
