Description:
The following item depicts a map of the northern Scranton region in Pennsylvania. It is printed in blue on a beige page, and lists a number of the local coal mining, canal, and railroad companies that owned these lands, including the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the Pennsylvania Coal Company, the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, the Butler Coal Company, etc. Alongside these larger companies, there are tracts with individual names for those owning parties. There are also notations for nearby waterways or rivers, such as the Lackawanna River. In very light or faded lines, we see topographical annotations, with thin blue lines curving over the map.
A topographic map details a two-dimensional landscape, featuring both the natural features alongside the man-made, i.e. rivers and roads. As noted, the contour lines are a prominent feature of these maps, each one connecting points of a height above sea-level. The spacing tells the viewer the slope of the terrain, with closer lines meaning steeper slopes, and gentler slopes defined by father apart lines.
The date for this item has been estimated by dates of other maps coming out of this region, dates ranging from 1889-1999, some of which are found digitized here.
