Title:
North Eastern Part of Luzerne County Warrant Map
Description:
The following item, dated roughly during the late nineteenth-early twentieth century, depicts a multicolored map of the north eastern part of Luzerne county. The various townships are distinctly separated by different colors for their borders, with individual tracts outlined with land owning names and contained acres in each quadrant. The townships included are Benton, Greenfield, Scott, Abington, Fell, Carbondale, Blakely, Jefferson, Scranton, Roaring Brook, Madison, Spring Brook, Covington, Lackawanna, Pittston, Bear Creek, Buck, Plains, Jenkins, Ransom, Newton, Dunmore, and Old Forge.
There are also a number of rivers, creeks, and watercourses mapped on the item, including the Lackawanna and Susquehanna rivers, as well as numerous ponds and lakes.
This map is titled a Warrant Map, which is a map that shows the original land purchases, the warrants for land, for those specific geographical areas, such as townships in this case.
This map looks similar to those that we have seen from Frederick William Beers, who surveyed the Susquehanna region in his work, Atlas of Susquehanna Co. Pennsylvania. From Actual Surveys By and Under the direction of F. W. Beers. Published by A. Pomeroy & Co., New York, 1872.
The date for the item has been estimated according to others like it, created by Beers in the late nineteenth century.
