Description:

The following item depicts a reproduction of Daniel Glover Beers’s survey and map of Pittston, published originally in 1873 in his work, Atlas of Luzerne Co. Pennsylvania. From Actual Surveys By and Under the direction of D. G. Beers. Published by A. Pomeroy & Co., New York, 1873. The map is a dual colored map with the majority of the township colored yellow, but Pleasant Valley PO and Pittston PO marked with red coloring. There are a number of individuals owned land tracts which are marked by a bullet point and name for individual party names. There are also company holders, including Maryland Coal Company, Pittston & Elmira Coal Company, and others. Along the map, various railroad tracks are etched with a staggered line, indicating where tracks branch off and in what direction. It also includes the natural landscape markers, such as the Susquehanna River, creeks and branches, and the Jacobs Mountain range. There are also what appear to be thin lines indicating nearby man-made roads and various coal shaft names, such as Little York shaft. The township is bordered by Exeter, West Pittston, Jenkins, Spring Brook, Lackawanna, Old Forge, and Ransom. A legend in the bottom left corner mentions that the map is scaled 2 miles to an inch. This map is considered a survey and atlas map. Atlas maps are generally used for reference and study, printed traditionally in a book and can include contextual information of the region depicted as well, including statistics, facts, indexes, and even pictures.
