Description:

The following item depicts an antique map of Wilkes Barre and the surrounding metropolitan areas, compiled by John Sturdevant in October of 1942. The map depicts various townships and boroughs, including Plains, Swoyersville, Forty Fort, Wilkes Barre, Ashley, Kingston, Edwardsville, Courtdale, Larksville, Plymouth, and Hanover. The map includes various waterways, such as the Susquehanna river is depicted and labeled, street and road names in each of the town grids, highways, ferry roads, flood control dykes, railroads such as Nanticoke Branch Central and Lehigh Valley Railroads, parks such as Kirby park, and population numbers. The reverse of the manuscript has a legend based system to explain which individuals own tracts of land in specific townships or boroughs, arranged alphabetically by last name. The listings have a code, which the legend at the bottom right corner of the page denotes which township or borough they live in, and what looks like the acreage they have. The map itself is built on a grid, annotated within a four wall framed outline, with the top and bottom frame labelled a-o, and the left and right side numbered 1-22. The map was copyrighted in 1942 by John Sturdevant and printed by E. B. Yordy.
