Description:

The following item is a black and white print copy of a map by Nicholas Scull, 1686-1762, and George Heap, 1714-1752, detailing the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The map was originally printed in 1752 and was the first to depict a sketch of the Philadelphia State House, as it was still under construction in the year the map was printed. It is believed by other sources that it was because Heap and Scull’s positions enabled them access to the blueprints of the building by which they created their sketches. Geographics’s website states that “Heap was a surveyor and city coroner of Philadelphia, and Nicolas Scull, the Survey Gneral of the Province of Pennsylvania,” and would have had access to those private documents. The black and white map shows the surrounding towns and cities near Philadelphia, zoomed out enough to show larger areas of southeast Pennsylvania and West New Jersey. It notes waterways and townships as well, and the small buildings as markers are very detailed and different depending on what they showed - like homes, mills, and meeting houses. It also includes a detailed picture of the state house at the top. The John Carter Brown Library has a black and white copy digitized, with a brief history of the creators and the region.
