Title:

International Exhibition, Philadelphia, Situation Plan

Description:

The following item shows a large lithographic map, dated 1876, depicting a large scale model of Philadelphia’s region for the International Exhibition to take place. The map is titled the Siutation plan, or a city plan, and is printed by Taylor & Smith. The map contains many building markers, such as the U.S. Government Exhibition Building, the Machinery Buiding, the British Government Building, and more. There are details of the city, such as the landscaping, roads and streets winding about, some of which are labeled, like the intersection of Belmont Drive and Belmont Avenue, and other attractions, such as the Passenger Railroad Cars and the Trans Continental or Globe Hotel. Interesting aspects of the map show details of where future buildings are breaking ground, such as the marker of Ground for the Japanese Government. Additionally, there are markers for the geographical inclusions, such as lakes, rivers, and valleys. At multiple points on the map, there are handwritten notes in pencil. These appear to be street names, such as back End, Market St, River Rd, and Nestonalle(?).
