Disclaimer for Name and Subject Authorities
Some of the name and subject authority tags have been assigned by educated guessing and estimation of persons and subjects by region, age, profession, and familial relationships. They have been thoroughly researched by using primary and secondary sources available digitally, and named in each description, or in some cases linked directly to the person tag.

Language of Materials
From the Collection: English
Type of Material:
Map
General Condition:
Poor. The document is held together by tape in three places, and some of this yellowed tape is also ripped by now. The top and bottom edges are both frayed with several small rips and tears lining them, though they are much worse on the map than the sheet of text. The two actually look like separate sheets that were attached by tape rather than one sheet repaired by it. The map is older and more yellowed, and the other sheet is more white but still dirty along the edges. This text sheet does have one larger torn chunk out of the top center, but is otherwise only marred by some smudges and old underlines within the text. Handle with care.
Description:
This is a lithographic publication's map of Westmoreland shown by the Connecticut surveys, made by Wagner & McGuigan. This is a reproduction of an earlier map created in the 1790s, digitized on the Library of Congress’ website, and created possibly by the Susuquehanna Land Company. The leftmost section is the description of the map and the information on how it came to be. It almost serves a footnote for some descriptors of the map, such as the starred counties being those under claim of Connecticut settlers prior to the Decree of Trenton, including Ulster, Exeter, Wilkes Barre, Brantrum, Bradford, Pittstown, Kingston, and more. It lists dates and general areas of other additions to the Westmoreland area, including Indian purchases and grants. Landmarks of the Lackawa settlement / birthplace of George W. Woodward, 1809-1875, the map’s author’s cabin, the childhood residence of Andrew Beaumont, 1790-1853, a tavern, the headquarters of Gen. Ezekiel Hyde, 1771-1805, / store of Enoch Reynolds / home of Judge Jabez Hyde, 1775-1841, and nine forts in the area are noted as well. The closing of the text section discusses the difficulty in finding these maps to preserve them. The right side of the document is much larger and features the map described in the text. It mainly pictures the northeast of Pennsylvania, with towns divided into small boxes and mainly set into grids. Sections that were purchased together have the title of their transfer overlaid on the boxes (ie. Albany 1734). Other than these, the map is mostly unmarked for other features, only rivers being detailed and labeled.
Some of the regions included are Huntington; Salem; Plymouth; Kingston; Newport; Hanover; Wilkes Barre; Pittston, Providence, Exeter; Bedford, Northmoreland, Putnam / Tunkhannock; Braintrim, Springfield; Claverack, Ulster; Athens; M’Kean; Elk; New England; Allensburg; Mont-Rose; Harrisburg; Bozrah; Connecticut; Lawsville, Cunningham; Baltimore; Fort Durkee; Fort Wyoming; Fort Ogden; Wintermoot’s Fort; Jenkin’s Fort, (three unnamed Pittston Forts); and Monokacy Island.
