General Condition:

Fair. The paper isn’t brittle, rather decently thick and sturdy despite its age. There are a few older creases in different spots across the paper and a few small tears along the edges, but nothing major enough to risk the map. The sheet is discolored and is rather dirty with smudge marks and small stains.

Measurements:

9 3/16 in. x 11 ½ in.

Description:

The following item depicts a hand drawn map in ink from Charles Alexander depicting a number of the northern central states, such as Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Washington. There is a notation of “British America” to the north in 1864. Most of the states are drawn more simplistic, with only their borders in relation to Dakota as well as a few rivers that may cross into their territory, but this map overall focuses on Dakota. It features mostly geographical traits of mountains, lakes, rivers and their offshooting creeks, and also some forts of the time. On the back is written, “C. Alexander 1864 Charles Alexander His Map”, as well as the faint traces of a signature that appears to be “Charles W. Clement(?)”. The regions depicted in the map include Nebraska, [south] Dakota, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Washington.
