Description:
The following item depicts a reproduction of John Patten’s 1753 map titled, A Trader’s Map of the Ohio Country Before 1753. The reproduction is dated roughly following the original creation date of 1753, likely in the mid to late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The map captures the Pennsylvania and Ohio border, as well as the surrounding physical landscape, such as rivers, branches, and Lake Eerie. The Appalachian mountain range is sketched on the western region of Pennsylvania and there is a notation for Lake Ontario in the upper right hand corner. There are a number of settlements or trails also mentioned on the map, one blog naming them as including Pinkwaawilenionki, Kiihkayonki, and Longstown. The trails are marked by a four pointed star. In the top left hand corner, a scale marks the measurements of the map, indicating that it is rendered in miles to a degree of Latitude.
