Title:
Map of Pennsylvania
Description:
The following item depicts a multicolored map of Pennsylvania, created by Lane S. Hart for Smull’s Hand Book, or Smull's legislative hand book and manual of the state of Pennsylvania. The map depicts the state of Pennsylvania divided into counties by color variation, and contains annotations of roads, railroads, and canals. It is printed by Lane. S. Hart, who includes a scale of the mileage in the top left hand corner. Lake Erie is captured in the top left hand border of the state, and in the top right hand corner is a key or legend explaining details of the map, such as a star for a state capitol, a crosshatch grid for cities, a circle icon for county towns, villages, post offices, etcetera. There are also varying line designators for railroads, common roads, and canals.
The date of the map has been determined by a comparison with a similar map found on Maps of Pennstlvania’s website, which has a black and white copy of Hart’s map digitized and dated 1872.
