Title:
Ortelius, 1595
Description:
The following item depicts a postcard created roughly in the twenty-first century by Richard B. Arkway, of a “Map of Islandia [Iceland],” Anders Sørensen Vedel and published by Abraham Ortelius for his atlas titled Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The map is highly decorative, depicting the physical geography of Iceland, including its mountains, fjords, and nearby glaciers. The volcano in the background, Mount Hekla, is drawn mid-eruption, and there are a plethora of mythical creatures filling the foreground sea, and drawn stylistically of the era. The map was of great significance when produced in the 16th century, as it was believed to be the “first relatively accurate map of Iceland from indigenous sources” (ICA Commisson on Map Design)
