Description:
This is a charter for Berlin Township. It first lays out the township’s measurements. It then notes all of the proprietors of the township. The next part includes meeting minutes, which are largely about the positions people are elected to within the proprietorship of the township and the responsibilities. It seems likely that this township is now Fishing Creek Township and Stillwater, PA.

Berlin Grant—
Pursuant to a Vote of the Susquehannah (sic) Co[mpany] held at Norwich April 1st 1772 Granting Liberty to Locate, and lay out Township; agreeable thereto Obadiah Gore Jun[io]r appearing as an Agent for a Number of Proprietors who have produced sufficient Evidence of their being Proprietors and their Taxes Paid. Accordingly we the subscribers Order, the sd [said] Gore go forth, & Survey a Township for said Proprietors, who has laid out and surveyed the same on the Water of Fishing Creek. Beginning at a Black Oak Tree, on the North side of sd [said] Creek mark’d on Two sides and a heap of stones about it. Thence extending up sd Creek. One Hundred Ninety five Rod, as the Creek runs. Crossing the Creek & extending East 30° North Nine Hundred Rod, till it comes to sd Creek. Thence up the sd Creek Five Hundred Forty Rod, which make in the whole Five miles to a Large white Pine Tree mark[e]’d on Two sides with the Letter, B. Thence North 30° West Five Miles to a Stake and heap of stones, Thence West 30°South Five Miles to Tree Mark’d, Thence south 30 East Five Miles to the ss [said] mentioned Bound, which survey is, at the Request of the Honorable Hez: Huntington Esq, Mr Isaac Tracy, Capt Eben Baldwin, and Sam Tracy and Others as List of whom, is herewith Delivered to us the subscribers this 19th Day of Nov 1773-

Norwich Dec[embe]r 29th 1773 At a meeting of Mess[er]r Isaac Tracy, Elisha Tracy, Sam[ue]l Tracy and the rest of the Proprietors of a Township lately survey’d to them on the Susquehannah Purchase by Mr Obadiah Gore Ju and of a Com appointed to lay out Townships on sd purchase_____ Sd Town laid out on Fishing Creek on sd Susquehannah Purchase.
Voted. That Mr. Isaac Tracy be Moderator of sd meeting That Sam[ue]l Tracy Esq Be Clerk. That Page 3: That sd Township be called and known by the Name of Berlin. That Mr. Obadiah Gore Jud be desired or appointed to lott out sd Township into Lotts in 3 Division, sd Lotts to be laid out for Quantity & Quality. That a Comte [Committee] of Three Proprietors, be Chosen to warn Meetings, and Transact affairs respecting the Prudentials of sd Town. That Mr. Isaac Tracy, Capt: Eben Baldwin & Sam Tracy Esq be a Com for the purpose aforesd That sd Saml Tracy be Treasurer for sd Town. That when Mr. Obadiah Gore Judge shall make a return of a Compleat survey of sd Township & sd allotments of sd Town with proper survey Bills, that, the Proprietor, that shall not at the drawing of sd Lott, pay his full proportion of the Cost and Charge due for Surveying & allotting (to the Comte) and six Pence more, for the Purpose of purchasing Record Books &c [etcetera] shall forfeit his Right in sd Township, and that some other Proprietor that shall pay to sdCom the above proportion of cost and expense and sd Six Pence shall be entitled to [illegible/torn] in sd Township: and shall draw his Lott with the Rest of sd Proprietors.
Norwich Jan[uar]y 25th 1775 At a Meeting of the Proprietors of sd Berlin Voted, That that part of the Township of sd Berlin that is not allotted; lie and remain so much of it, for Quantity and Quality, as one whole Right, or 5erd Part, in sd Township, to be alotted and used, for the support of a school, in sd Township. That Page 4:
That there be a reserve in every Lott in sd Town of Berlin for necessary Highways, where it shall best serve the Publick (sic) and least prejudice the private Interest, to be under the Direction of a Comte for that purpose.
