Land Deed

General Description:

Poor. The letter was written on a piece of lined notebook paper or a legal pad in pencil. The paper itself is in rough condition - it has yellowed along the edges and has creases from being folded into quarters. Each of these creases have a tear into the paper along them, as well as smaller tears along the top and bottom of the page. The bottom quarter of the page is in the worst condition, having been completely torn off from the rest of the paper and having a large tear nearly all the way through. There are a few creases on the paper, notably the top left and bottom right corners, but they do not appear to be ripped along those as of now. The pencil has only smudged a little, but some lines drawn on the back of the page seem to have transferred other graphite onto the writing. The paper is in a protective sleeve to keep the damage from worsening.

Description:

The following item is a handwritten copy of a land deed from Sarah Blanchard, 1804-1892, to the Pennsylvania and New York Canal and Railroad Company, dated November 27 1867. In the deed, Blanchard is designating an area of land containing 2 acres. The land is lying 32 1/10 feet from a line dividing Blacnahrd’s land with other parcels already held by the company. There are directional coordinates that designate the boundaries notated by a field survey. There is no mention of the price paid for the land or the surveyor who walked the boundaries. On the back of the page, there is a drawing of lines through a square. The top right section of the manuscript states that the deed was recorded on January 22, 1868. The land has been estimated as being situated in Jenkins based on other items where the sales are taking place in said township, such as Item 32, 5, and 17.
