General Condition:

Fair. The three sheets are in relatively good condition despite their age. The paper is a little yellowed from age, and the top left corner of each page has several small holes from previous staples.

Measurements:

11 in. x 8 ½ in.

Description:

A typewritten sale of land from Sarah Blanchard, 1804-1892, to the “Pennsylvania & New York Canal & Railroad Company” for $900 on November 10 1888. The document gives a description of the lot and the location of the land in question as well as all the legal language to change the ownership, setting the boundaries of the previous owner and her heirs to those of the new ones. It seems to relinquish the surface of the land to the company, but retains rights to the coal and any other minerals “under and upon the same,” presumably giving the railroad the right to build there but not utilize any other resources present. The Blanchards were a prominent family of the area in Jenkins Township known as Port Blanchard, which is connected back to Captain Jeremiah Blanchard, one of its first settlers. It is named for one of his children, John Blanchard, and the family was very involved in landowning as seen through the trades and sales their names often show up in. There are two small penciled in annotations on the first page, but they only correct grammatical errors.

Location:

Port Blanchard / Jenkins Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania
