Description:

This is a printed copy of a land deed from Richard M. Crain, 1777-1852, to Jeremiah Blanchard Jr. for $137.71 for a tract of land in Pittston on February 11 1815. The paper is headed with a small disclaimer marking it as a photocopy of the deed in question. The land in the copied document, lot 10, is marked by a surveyed description of its perimeters. The document mentions the survey being taken for “An Act for offering compensation to the Pennsylvania claimants of certain lands within the seventeen townships in the County of Luzerne and for other purposes therein mentioned” by Blanchard. It confirms the sale and transfers all rights from Crain to Blanchard as well as a witness named John Cochran, 1761-1869.

{deed} [THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA,] [To all whom these Presents shall] come, Greeting: Know ye, That in consideration of the sum of one hundred thirty seven dollars and seventy one cents in full paid by Jeremiah Blanchard Jun[io]r into the Treasury office of this Commonwealth there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said Jeremiah Blanchard Jun[io]r a certain tract of land (being Lot No. 6 the first division) Situate in Pittstown one of the seventeen township in the County of Luzerne Beginning at a corner, thence by No. 7. South sixty one degrees East, two hundred thirty one perches to a corner, thence along a road, south fifty six degrees thirty minutes West, one hundred perches to a corner, thence by No 5, North sixty one degrees West, two hundred fourteen perches to a corner, thence up the Susquehanna, north forty five degrees East, fifty four perches to a corner, & north fifty one degrees East, forty perches to the Beginning containing One hundred fourteen acres. Fifty perches & Allowance &ca [etcetera] Which said Lot No 6, was surveyed to the said Jeremiah Blanchard Jun[io]r in pursuance of an Act entitled “An Act for offering compensation to the Pennsylvania claimants of certain lands within the seventeen townships in the County of Luzerne and for other purposes therein mentioned” passed the 4th April 1799 and the Supplements thereto passed, 15th March 1800 & 6th April 1802.

To have and to hold the said Tract or Parcel of Land, with the Appurtenances, unto the said Jeremiah Blanchard Jr and his Heirs to the use of him the said Jeremiah Blanchard Jr his Heirs and Assigns forever, Free and Clear of all Restrictions and Reservations, as to Mines, Royalties, Quit-rents, or otherwise, excepting and reserving only the fifth part of all Gold and Silver Ore, for the use of this COMMONWEALTH to be delivered at the Pit’s Mouth, clear of all Charges. In Witness whereof, John Cochran Secretary of the Land-office of the said Commonwealth, hath hereto set his Hand, and the Seal of the Land-office of Pennsylvania hath been hereunto affixed the Eleventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Fifteen and of the Commonwealth the thirty ninth
