Description:

A typescript copy of an indenture made between multiple families compiling their lands for sale to Charles and Catherine Saylor. The families are David and Susan Thomson, Jacob and Mary Saylor, Jesse and Ann Gardner, and David and Catherine Thomson. The deed poll is for the sum of $1, 400.00, and contains 100 acres of lands in Pittston township, spanning over parts or whole sections of lots two, three, and four. The deed is witnessed by Henry Cortright and Peter Winter for half of the families, and Peter Winter and Joel Hale for Jacob Saylor and his wife, Mary. The final sale and payment of the $1,400 received in full is witnessed by Peter Winter on February 14, 1828, and recorded on May 7, 1829. The deed first regards the people involved and their relation, then gives a small survey of the land in question in relation to other lots around it and measurements. It finally goes over the legal language transferring titles and rights to the new owner and includes everything on the land. The Saylor (Saler, Seiler, Sailor) family was very involved in land purchases in the Luzerne area, including Wilkes-Barre, Pittston, Jenkins, and Plains, throughout most of the 1800s. Here, they are related to the Thomson and Gardner families through marriage.
