Description:

This is a typewritten copy of a land deed from William W. Loomis, 1815-1894, and his wife, Elizabeth R. Loomis, 1821-1869, to William R. Griffith, for $350.00 for a plot of land in Pittston on May 1 1847. It introduces both parties and the sale of the land before detailing the land only in relation to the other lots surrounding it. It mentions the passage of one section of land through the Blanchards to explain how the Loomis’ have a portion of the land. Before the legal transfer, the document makes note of an instance where Elizabeth R. had previously sold a part of her land to Samuel Hodgeden Jr., who then moved into a house on said lands but did not fulfill his end of the sale, thus legally forfeiting the land and former contract. There is some unclear business mentioned with Ferry and Fishery and Eel Ware to reserve/except certain areas from this sale within the next section before confirming the legal transfer of land and rights from seller to buyer. The Blanchards were a prominent family of the area in Jenkins Township known as Port Blanchard, which is connected back to Captain Jeremiah Blanchard, one of its first settlers. It is named for one of his children, John Blanchard, and the family was very involved in landowning as seen through the trades and sales their names often show up in. They are related to the ( Loomis, Kesler/Kester, and Bulkeley families through marriage. An annotation on the back of the third sheet seems to be a note of what the document is. Name is copied incorrectly - Should be Kesler instead of Kester.
