Type of Material

Land Deed

General Condition:

Fair. The paper is quite thin, originally some off-white paper. It is somewhat see-through when above its other sheet but still retains some of its flexibility. Both sheets are creased, and small tears are beginning on those creases as well as a few near those areas. There are also staple marks on both sheets, and page 1’s staples left some residue from rust, and it’s top corner is folded back. There are pencil markings and annotations on both sheets, and some significant discoloration is also present on both, though page 1 seems to have taken the brunt of it. It appears that something else either covered one part of the papers and reacted with it to make a tan rectangle on the sheet, or that was an opening for some damage from the sun or another exposure.

Measurements:

11 in. x 8 ½ in.

Description:

This is a typescript copy of a land deed from the Bloomsburg Iron Company to the Pennsylvania Coal Company for $22,000.00 for two plots of land on May 7-26 1864. Both are part of lot 6 in Pittston Township and are specified to include the coal and minerals contained within the lands. The first parcel is marked by a small survey-like description of its perimeters and relations to other lots in the area, those being lots 5 and 6, and contains 19 acres and 83 perches. The second parcel is marked by a small survey-like description of its perimeters and relations to other lots in the area, those being the lands of lot 5 and 6, as well as the lands of William R. Griffith. It contains 66 acres. It mentions a previous ownership through a sale by John Blanchard, 1801-1853, and wife (Assumed to be referring to Sarah Blanchard, 1804-1892) to Bloomsburg Iron Co. on Novermber 29 1848, which now is moved to Penna. Coal Co. The document also has penciled in notes above the measurements of the land sections, presumably done later on. These original measurements had been measured in perches, and almost all of these annotations are exactly 16.5 times the number of perches, changing to a measurement in feet. Two don’t fit this pattern, with one being off by a decimal placement and another having measurements that are either different or calculated incorrectly.
