Language of Materials

From the Collection: English

Type of Material:

Land Deed

General Condition:

Fair.. The paper was torn either apart or out of some sort of notebook/writing pad. The left edge is uneven, but all others are machine cut. The writing is slightly slanted to the right, possibly from being loaded into the typewriter incorrectly. There are three creases in the sheet, one as if it had been folded in half, and the other two as if it were folded into thirds. The Bottom crease appears to have been outward facing the most due to its advanced aging when compared to the rest of the paper. There are two small holes at the top from staples as well as a correlating crease there. The index card has a different sized staple mark on its top as well.

Measurements:

8 1/2 in. x 7 in. {deed}; 2 ⅞ in. x 4 ⅞ in. {card}

Description:

This is a typewritten copy of an agreement / deed from Dorothy C. Stets, 1912-1985, to Thomas H. Celano and Matt Macarelli for $50.00 binder for an “interest in land and Right of Way” on September 25th 1958. The land in question is in Plains township, marked by its Mill and Gardener creek boundaries in the area, and the right of way is said to have been given by Charles Chapman, son of (Charles) Isaac Abel Chapman. Stets gives her full price of her interest as $1,000.00. The next lines tell of Celano’s lawyers quitting the claim, listing its location in a book, and marking that date as October 9 1957, and the final line presumably marks the source of this information as a book of a Mr. Rafferty’s, possibly Michael Joseph Rafferty, from Lehigh Valley Coal Company. There is also a small annotation on the back of the deed in red pencil reading “agreement.” The second item in this folder is a handwritten index card of unknown purpose. The card marks a calendar with the 22nd of the month circled with a small notation of something being conveyed to an unidentified second term on Dec 22, 1959.
