Language of Materials

From the Collection: English

Type of Material:

Legal documents/Contracts

General Condition:

Fair. The paper itself seems to be a type of copy paper, very flimsy and nearly translucent. It is creased due to this fragility on both sides, though it is more significant on the left side of both pages and the bottom right of the second page. There are small rips on both pages from staples in two separate places - one only leaving holes from the metal, but the second tearing a small chunk from the second page. There is also a small note handwritten on the back of the second page in ink.

Measurements:

11 in. x 8 ⅝ in.

Description:

These are typewritten copies of legal documents. The first is an overview of a deed’s instructions from the will of Arthur Erwin to Thomas Steweart. It outlines his duties and responsibilities coming from the power of attorney for Erwin’s heirs, including himself. He has authority over what is done on land owned on the Susquehanna river, at that time under the management of previously Cornelius Nefus, now Thomas Wright, and the document closes with mentions of executions of actions involving William Stark with the land and matters of (i)ndorsements. The second is a deed from Edward Mott to James Finn for £ 36 for a plot of land on January 13 1772. This discusses the more numerical aspects of the land such as the aforementioned price and the size, 1100 acres, as well as a small description of its location in relation to other lots, those being of Jeremiah Blanchard and John Brown. This page has an annotation on the backside in pen that reads, “Water Race in Pittston”.
