Language of Materials
From the Collection: English
Type of Material:
Legal Contract/ Land Deed
General Condition:
Good. The paper does not have any tears, but is fragile with age. The edges are slightly yellowed, and there are a few creases - the largest in the center, then one splitting the top and another the same on the bottom to fold it into quarters. Though this sheet was not stapled, it appears that it may have been stored next to something with a staple at some point given the small orange marks in the upper left hand corner.
Measurements:
11 in. x 8 ½ in.
Description:
This is a typewritten copy of a document, mainly from Samuel Van Loon, 1811-1885, to Andrew T[odd]. McClintock, 1810-1892, discussing a lawsuit that occurred and an exchange of land as a result on January 13 1860. He discusses how he was ordered to levy the “goods, and chattels lands and tenaments” of Sarah Blanchard, 1804-1892, of D. Blanchard, 1824-1910, and A. M. Stout as well as $371.97 in an unclear matter involving George Miller Law and Co. and I. I. Slocum. These seem to be a payment for some sort of debts and damages, and the lands were to be sold to “make return to Court.” It is paid off with the sale of the debtors' lands and their contents in the Court of Common Pleas to Andrew T[odd]. McClintock, and he gives the legal reasoning for the sale at the end.
The Blanchards were a prominent family of the area in Jenkins Township known as Port Blanchard, which is connected back to Captain Jeremiah Blanchard, one of its first settlers. It is named for one of his children, John Blanchard, and the family was very involved in landowning as seen through the trades and sales their names often show up in.
