Description:
This is a photostat copy of a power of attorney between Samuel Purviance Jr. and Erastus Smith over a plot of land on August 6th 1856. The land and its allowances are stated to span through parts of Pittston, Exeter, and Old Forge in Luzerne county. The document is slightly difficult to follow, but seems to be the resolution to either some uncertainties in land ownership or sales. It appears that (rough guess) some land belonging to Purviance was partially given to Smith by way of a warrant in 1856 and later releases the owners of the land from the liability to pay the lien designated by the survey that Purviance entered for another purpose .The bottom of the document is sealed under Surveyor General Robt. B. Beath, 1839-1914, and beneath that is a more recent seal confirming that this is a copy under the name of Isaac B. Brown, 1848-1925.
There is another manuscript with Purviance’s land, found in item 34: A Photostat of a Survey of Samuel Purviance’s Land by the Sturdevant Coal Company, [ca. ] (removed to grey box #4)
