Description:

This is a typewritten history of a tract of land and its exchanges between various people. It begins with a small note describing the lands in discussion with the exceptions of lands owned by other persons and companies. It belonged to Sheriff S. Van Loon, 1811-1885, excepting the land and coal rights which had been previously sold by John Blanchard, 1801-1853, and wife Sarah, 1804-1892, to the Bloomsburg Railroad and Iron previously, and a second exception from coal and minerals in a separate section of the tract which had been sold by McClintock and wife, and Sarah Blanchard, to the Pennsylvania Coal Co. in 1860. The document then begins to list the sales in sections. The first describes sales in 1850 (to Bloomsburg R.R., reserved part of surface), 1860 (to Penn Coal Co.), 1865 (to Penn Coal Co.), 1867 (to Penn N.Y. Canal Rail Road, reserved coal), and 1888 (to Penn N.Y. Canal Rail Road, reserved coal) from either John or Sarah Blanchard to companies. The second section has a small note on further sales by one company. It is labeled as 1897 and sold several strips of the surface in either Jenkins Township or an area near Port Blanchard in specific. The third is on an exception for “surface or right of way” from 1888 and describes the land presumably in question within the sale and its exception, but is cut off on the bottom. There are two identical copies of this page, one of which used to be item 23. One copy of these has a small annotation in pencil in the last section on the bottom marking the referenced documents location in a deed book: D.B 278 - page 158. This document references item 1b.The third page seems to be missing the introduction tying it to the others, and only contains the legal transference of some land. Without the introduction, it isn’t quite clear who the land was originally owned by, but the transfer was between Asa and David Dimock and the “Connecticut Title or Susquehanna Company.” These may be two separate documents entirely, as the second page seems to be an average closing for a land deed, not the same descriptive style of the first page. The witnesses of either that final sale or of the overview of the document are Sylvester McKay and John Phillips, under the seal of Elijah Slater.
