Description:
A handwritten but incomplete journal of an unknown author detailing records of what may be a trip as well as his everyday life throughout Eastern Pennsylvania during May and June of 1818. The author is mentioned to do ‘business’ for individuals often regarding matters of land and law, mostly seeming to be personal matters, but he does mention working with one company, the North American Land Company. He also mentions serving as a prosecutor in a martial court (pg. 17) as well as attending the party of a Judge Burnsides (pg. 8) at different points, suggesting a possible profession in the legal field. This business is never specified, but he travels throughout the towns and counties and interacts with many people. He also mentions attending a militia meeting (pg. 7) and a battalion review (pg. 11) at different instances, so we suspect he may have had some military position. It is very cut and dry in the majority of entries, but a few contain stories of interesting events or personal gossip of the townspeople, as well as mentions of a wife named Rebecca. The entries are in chronological order, having been written presumably day by day as a record of events and travels.
