Description:

The following item dated October 2, 1894, depicts a letter from Charles Isaac Abel Chapman to Sheldon Reynolds. In the letter, Chapman is speaking about the Battle of Locust Hill, a conflict between the Connecticut and Pennsylvania settlers during the Yankee Pennamite Wars. He explains that Armstrong and Boyd, captains on the Pennsylvania side, who were later replaced by Moore from Philadelphia and clashed with Swift’s command of Connecticut, with Shcrawder, and includes a line that he suggests Reynolds will remember about driving them through the “shades of Death,” and away from the valley. Chapman mentions that he has found papers on the conflict in his father’s papers, where he builds a connection between current railroad company lands, such as the Lehigh Valley Railroad company’s branch on Harvey’s Lake, which Chapman suggests would have come about as payment to Moore and Shrawder for their service in this conflict.

Port Blanchard Oct[ober] 2nd [18]94 Sheldon Reynolds Esq[uire] — You will doubtless recollect the incident known as the Battle of “Locust Hill” — a skirmish between forces detailed by the notorius Pennamite leaders Armstrong and Boyd Col[onel] John Moore of Philad[elphi]a being in actual command on the P[ennsylvania] side and Capt[ain] John Swift on the Connecticut side. You will also recollect that the “Hessians” subsequently Enlisted to Expect our friends from the valley and drive them through the “Shadows of Death” were under command of Capt[ain] Schrawder. I find among my Fathers papers the Enclosed fragment which in this connection seems to possess Historic interest. These lands (now crossed by the L.V.R.R. Harveys Lake Branch) were doubtless in payment to Moore & Schrawder for their services at that time Yours truly C. I. A. Chapman
