Description:
The following item dated December 23, 1816, depicts a deed by Jacob Cist, treasurer of Luzerne county, to David Scott. It is witnessed by George Matson Hollenback and Charles Frederick Welles. In the deed, the lands of Abijah Starr have been repossessed by the county for taxes unpaid, composed of $2.00 to the county, and $8.00 of road taxes. These lands contain 400 acres and have been put up for public sale. Scott was the highest bidder, purchasing the lands for $13.62 ½ cents. The remainder of the deed states that all rights and profits are transferred from Starr to Scott, and protected against any other claim under the Starr warrant. On the back of the deed, in pencil, Andrew Hamilton McClintock has written a note that the deed is signed by two of his sons' great grandfathers, Hollenback and Cist. McClintock has been inferred as the creator by comparison of his signature to Gilbert’s, his son, on other items in the collection, such as 1.57 Item 57a-b: Two Photographs of the McClintock Dining Room, staging for the Historical Society’s Centennial Celebration, 1926.
