Series IV: “Nanticoke-Pittston-Wyoming” (NPW) Wilkes-Barre Area Medical Complex records, 1969-1978

Series IV: “Nanticoke-Pittston-Wyoming” (NPW) Wilkes-Barre Area Medical Complex records, 1969-1978, contains a collection of documents that explain the long-range plan for the Nanticoke-Pittston-Wyoming Medical Complex, which would later become the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center. Across four subseries, Subseries I: Correspondence, 1969-1978, Subseries II: Reports, Proposals, and Contracts, 1970-1978, Subseries III: Committees: Meetings Minutes and Research Notes, 1965-1978, and Subseries IV: Newspapers and Pamphlets, 1969-[ca. 1978], the collection contains detailed records of the merger of three hospitals, highlighting long-range health planning, service identification and allocation, land and fund acquisition, and the strategic distribution of needed services identified by a previous study, namely the Rosenfeld report. In these subseries, there is extensive correspondence covering each stage of the planning, with a bulk of material to/from Max Rosenn, covering initial fundraising and project design from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. Meanwhile, the contracts address formal negotiations between the Wilkes-Barre Area Health Planning Council and investors or the Department of Public Welfare. Committee meetings focus on reactions to the planning reports and development of a robust referral program, and the news subseries offers insight into the public’s reaction to and use of the complex.

A majority of the items in the collection are in good condition, save for some of the reports, which have lost their bindings or the correspondence printed on delicate paper. Handle the materials carefully.
