Description:
The following is a photographic negative image, likely by Gilbert Stuart McClintock, from the mid-late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The original items, 11.86. Item 86, found in Subseries IV: Correspondence, General, 1777-1982, bulk 19th century. This is a letter from Daniel Webster to someone unknown on July 5, 1851. This letter introduces its bearer, who is a gentleman from Maryland. The creator of this letter, Daniel Webster, was born in New Hampshire in 1782. Webster was a member of the House of Representatives, had a seat in the Senate, was Secretary of State, and chair of the Senate Finance Committee. There is a second letter in the photograph, 11.31 Item 31: Letter from Horace Greeley to Hendrick B[radley]. Wright, 1872 August 10. Greeley was a candidate of the new Liberal Republican Party in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant. During this letter Greeley is hoping to get the support of Pennsylvania but is confident he can still win without PA’s support. The creator of this letter, Horace Greeley, was born in New Hampshire in 1811. Greeley was a newspaper publisher and editor, while also having served in the U.S. House of Representatives. The recipient of this letter, H[endrick] B[radley] Wright, was born in Pennsylvania in 1808. Wright would go on to study law and serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Later in his life he voiced his opinion on labor concerns and in 1871 Wright wrote a book on it.
