General

The Robert F. Lucid Papers, 1981-1998 series contains multiple drafts of Robert F. Lucid’s unfinished biography of Mailer. According to J. Michael Lennon, Lucid began work on this biography in 1981, but made little progress until he retired to Shavertown, PA in 1997 (he rented the Lennon home; the Lennons moved to university housing. Lucid lived in the Lennon home from the beginning of 1997 until the end of 1998, when he turned to Philadelphia and the Univ. of Pennsylvania, and all but abandoned the biography. At that point, he had written 180,000 words and taken Mailer from birth in 1923 to 1951. When Lennon, who was Lucid’s understudy, took over the project after Lucid’s death in December 2006, he decided to begin his biography from the beginning of Mailer’s life rather than continue Lucid’s, as their style and perspectives on Mailer were much different.
