Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Arnaud C. Marts was the son of Reverend William Gosser and Irene Almira Cartwright Marts born on October 9, 1888 in Reeds Corner, New York. As a young man, he attended Oberlin College which is also where his sister Zoe attended and graduated from in 1910. Post-graduation from Oberlin, he almost immediately began working for YMCA of Pittsburgh as assistant secretary. He continued advancing positions through the YMCA until eventually he obtained the position of chief of boys’ work for all the branches of the greater Pittsburgh area. Marts eventually left his work with the YMCA in 1911 to accept a position with Standard Life Insurance Company where once again he successfully advanced to the position of vice president and director for the company. He continued with Standard Life Insurance Company until 1917 where he began work to help raise funds for the war effort for World War I. He began said fundraising in Indiana attempting to help the state raise their share of the YMCA War Fund Campaign. A year later, in 1918, he was called to the capitol to be a leader of two funding drives. The first was the War Camp Community Service Fund which raised about $18 million dollars and second was the United Work Fund which raised about $170 million dollars. Later in 1918, he and some other men established a firm to create intense short-term campaigns to raise large amounts of money called Ward, Hill, Pierce, and Wells. He was a partner here from creation of the firm until 1926. Following this, Dr. Marts partnered with George E. Lundy and formed Marts & Lundy, Inc. where he would remain President for thirty years, Chairman from 1956 to 1967 and then honorary Chairman until his death.
Marts did not stop with Lundy & Marts, Inc. as far as his impressive employment history goes. In 1932, he became a Trustee of Bucknell University where he previously directed the funding campaign for the university’s gymnasium. He was appointed acting President of the university in 1935, which was supposed to be a temporary arrangement until students and faculty petitioned for him to stay President, which he did from 1938 until 1945. During his time as President of Bucknell University, he made many advancements to the university as well as its Junior College located in Wilkes-Barre. Bucknell University Junior College would eventually become Wilkes College which would eventually become Wilkes University as it is known today. During this time, Marts split his time between Lundy & Marts, Inc., Bucknell University, and Bucknell Junior College (later Wilkes College). As far as Wilkes College goes, Marts did quite a lot for the school. For reference, he appointed Dr. Eugene S. Farley President of Wilkes College, acquired many properties including Conyngham Hall, Kirby Hall, and more, and he served as vice chairman of the board and a member of The Wilkes College Board of Trustees.
The above mentioned would be more than enough to keep anyone busy, but again Dr. Arnaud C. Marts did not stop there. On top of running his business, acting as President of Bucknell University, and working to advance Wilkes College, he also played an integral part in the war effort of World War II. When the war began, he took a position as Executive Director of the Pennsylvania State Council of Defense which he held until 1943 when he was commissioned as a Captain of the United States Coast Guard Reserve. He remained in the Coast Guard from 1943 to 1945 as Chief, Temporary Reserve Division, where he directed a 100,000-man reserve program until being discharged in 1945. That same year, he resigned as President of Bucknell University and focused on fundraising, though he continued as a member of both the Board of Trustees for both Bucknell University and Wilkes College.
In case all of that was not enough, Dr. Marts wrote four books and many articles which pertained to fund-raising. He was also part of many civic institutions in which he held various positions. He was Chairman of the Board of the American Mission to the Lepers, President and Director of the Federal Union, President of the board of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, a trustee of Geisinger Memorial Hospital, Meharry Medical College in Tennessee, Crozer Theological Seminary, Bradford Junior College, Oberlin College, and as discussed, Bucknell University and Wilkes College. He received numerous honors and held honorary degrees from Hillside, Oberlin, Bucknell, and Hobart.
Aside from his professional life, he was married twice. His first wife, Ethel A. Daggett of Whiteside, New Jersey died in 1953 of cancer. On November 28, 1958 he married Anne McCartney who was the daughter of Francis J. McCartney of New York City. Anne was born in 1905, and while there is not much information of her early life, she served in World War II as a nurse via the American Red Cross. McCartney served as part of the American Red Cross from 1942 to 1946. She was sent to the South Pacific as part of her service and received several recognitions for her time in the Red Cross. After, she returned to New York City where she served as Executive Director of the Town Hall Club where Dr. Marts was a Director. This is believed to be where the couple met. Neither of Dr. Marts’ marriages produced any children. Dr. Arnaud C. Marts died July 11, 1970, leaving behind his wife, Anne. After her husband’s death, Anne was well taken care of through a series of trusts set up by Dr. Marts in 1964. Anne Marts died in 1994, leaving behind $2 million dollars to the now Wilkes University. This gift made the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center a reality. The Marts Center is still very much actively used today, and the memory of Anne and Arnaud Marts is seen throughout the Wilkes University campus.
