Scope and Content
The Thomas J. Baldino Faculty Papers represent a disparate number of materials from Dr. Baldino’s time here at Wilkes University. They include email correspondence, Survey Center documents, and his some of his work off-campus. The collection is a primarily physical collection of papers that were donated, though there are a few well-preserved newspaper articles involving Dr. Baldino over the last few decades. This collection also includes a small record of digital correspondence, which are restricted.
Series Description
The Thomas J. Baldino Faculty Papers is organized into three different sections. The first being On-Campus Life, the second being Off-Campus Life, and the third being the Wilkes University Survey Center. A second layer of organization exist in each box through a number of folders.
Series I: On-Campus Life, 1991-2018
Within this section is a collection of documents that relate to Dr. Baldino’s long tenure here at Wilkes University, specifically with regard to his on-campus presence from 1991-2018. A large portion of these documents are faculty evaluations and other positive assessments of Dr. Baldino while he served in various campus leadership positions, but there are also several sabbatical applications within. Most notably, however, might be the political science department’s mission statement that carefully emphasize the goals of the program. But all throughout Dr. Baldino’s time here at Wilkes, he was especially involved in many different activities outside the classroom. Of these, some of his most prominent work was with the Final Word Lectures, found in section 1.9.
Series II: Off-Campus Life, 1992-2012
This section features a collection of documents that relate to Dr. Baldino’s off-campus endeavors while serving as a professor at Wilkes, ranging from 1992-2012. Though Dr. Baldino was here for a significant amount of time, this collection does not represent the full breadth and depth of his activities off campus. Given his specialty in American institutions such as congress or the presidency, Dr. Baldino was often interviewed by various reporters covering some aspect of American politics, be they local, state, or national. Notably, Dr. Baldino also spent considerable time reviewing various book chapters in his capacity as the president of the National Political Science Association.
Series III: Wilkes University Survey Center, 1991-1996
Within these boxes are a series of documents relating to the Wilkes University Survey Center over the course of its lifetime. The documents were donated by Dr. Thomas Baldino, who worked with Dr. Michael Garr and the Survey Center after he came to Wilkes. Although not all documents could be definitively assigned to a specific year, some parts between 1991-1996 were attributable. It should be noted though, that the documents do not represent a full collection of the data and surveys collected. Rather, they help illustrate a piecemeal and broad overview of the Survey Center’s many projects within the Wilkes-Barre community. Of these documents, the results from the Temple Israel Survey in 3.1 best represent the Survey Center’s work at all stages of the data collection process. Dr. Garr’s highly detailed report with the Geisinger Assessment in 3.9 also provides us with his own perspective. Finally, a hodgepodge of documents relating to the Survey Center’s founding, ongoing improvements, and other topics can be found at the very end in 3.11. These include things like funding requests, equipment requests, and so on.
