Scope and Content:

The Sordoni Art Gallery Exhibition files consist mainly of marketing materials, bound catalogues for exhibitions and artists, invitations, event posters, calendars/schedules, and accompanying documents for exhibitions. These marketing materials include newsletters and news articles, postcards, flyers, and magazines. The accompanying exhibition documents include internal and external correspondence and memoranda with institutions and artists; financial documents including shipping, loaning, and fundraising documents. Other materials in the files include photographs, films, photo slides, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, floppy disks, and CDs. The collection is dated from 1973 to present day, as more materials for new exhibitions are added to the collection.

The exhibition files are closed for internal Wilkes departments. Digitization possible for outside researchers on a case-by-case basis. The exhibition programs have been digitized by Zachary Mendoza in Spring 2020 and Sophia Krupsha in Spring 2021 and have been made available online here: https://omeka.wilkes.edu/omeka/collections/show/24

Condition:

The condition of items in the collection varies between good to poor. In some cases the spines of pamphlets have been broken and pages are loose.

Provenance:

This collection originates from the Sordoni Art Gallery and was transferred to the Wilkes University Archives on February 23, 2017. This collection has maintained original order by Exhibition name and dates. A majority of programs and pamphlets were created by the university and a small number were acquired with donated exhibits. The exhibition programs that were donated by other institutions were not digitized as Wilkes University does not own copyright. All new pamphlets are donated by the Sordoni Art Gallery.

Acquisition:

In 2017, Heather Sincavage transferred this collection to the Wilkes University Archives. Collection contains exhibition guides and promotion, as well as photos and prints. The Wilkes University Archives acquired the Sordoni Art Gallery Exhibition files on February 23, 2017. They were transferred over to file cabinets in the Wilkes University Archives.

Series Description:

The Sordoni Art Gallery Exhibition Files are organized into seven series: Series I: Exhibition Programs, 1973-present, which includes two subseries: Subseries I: Exhibition Programs, 1973-present, and Subseries II: Promotional Posters, 1973-present; Series II: Exhibition Files, 1981-2003, with five subseries: Subseries I: Exhibitions, 1981-2003, Subseries II: Faculty Art Exhibitions, 1983-1998, Subseries III: Student/Alumni Exhibitions, 1982-1993, Subseries IV: Selections from the Permanent Collection: 1981-2003, and Subseries V: Scholastic Art Shows, 1979-1988; Series III: Sordoni Art Gallery Events, 1989-2003; Series IV: Cancelled Exhibitions and Events, 1986-1994; Series V: Maslow Collection, 1989-2002; Series IV: Correspondence, 1984-1997; and Series VII: Sordoni Art Gallery Admin/Development Files, 1994-2000.

Series I: Exhibition Programs, 1973-present:

Series I: Exhibition Programs, 1973-present, is sorted chronologically, and contains two subseries: Subseries I: Exhibition Programs, 1973-present, and Subseries II: Promotional Posters, 1973-present. This series contains promotional materials for the Sordoni Art Gallery’s exhibitions and projects. Materials within this series include handouts for exhibitions such as programs, booklets, brochures, postcards, exhibition catalogues, and also posters that had been hung up around the Wilkes campus to advertise the gallery.

Subseries I: Exhibition Programs, 1973-present

Subseries I: Exhibition Programs, 1973-present, sorted chronologically, contains handout materials that include programs, booklets, brochures, postcards, and exhibition catalogues. These handouts served as both promotional and informational materials for the gallery’s exhibitions and other events and projects.

Subseries II: Promotional Posters, 1973-present

Subseries II: Promotional Posters, 1973-present, contains large promotional posters for the Sordoni Art Gallery’s exhibitions, events, and educational and activist projects. Although this subseries is sorted chronologically, the dates of some posters' time of creation or relevance may overlap with posters advertising different events; all posters advertising a specific topic have been kept together for convenience. Due to the sizes of the posters, they have been placed in a separate white box. The box has been organized so that the posters are sorted from the oldest on the bottom of the stack to the newest on the top, for the sake of convenience for any future posters added to the collection.

Series II: Exhibition Files, 1981-present

Series II: Exhibition Files, 1981-present, contains five subseries: Subseries I: Exhibitions, 1981-2003, Subseries II: Faculty Art Exhibitions, 1983-1998, Subseries III: Student/Alumni Exhibitions, 1982-1993, Subseries IV: Selections from the Permanent Collection: 1981-2003, and Subseries V: Scholastic Art Shows, 1979-1988. This series is sorted chronologically and is restricted from public access, as it contains materials related to the development and planning of the Sordoni Art Gallery’s many exhibits. Materials include internal and external correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, condition reports, loan documents, photographs (including film and slides), floppy disks, audio tapes, VHS tapes, catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs.

Subseries I: Exhibitions, 1981-2003

Subseries I: Exhibitions, 1981-2003, is sorted chronologically. This subseries contains materials related to the development and planning of the Sordoni Art Gallery’s various exhibits that took place from 1981-2003 and materials related to the respective artists whose works were featured in the gallery. Materials include internal and external correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, condition reports, loan documents, photographs (including film and slides), floppy disks, audio tapes, VHS tapes, catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.
Note: a folder for the exhibition: “Klaus Holm, Stages in Retrospective, Nov 15 - Dec 13, 1987,” was discovered empty. Although there are no materials present in the collection currently, there may have been an existence of some.

Subseries II: Faculty Art Exhibitions, 1983-1998

Subseries II: Faculty Art Exhibitions, 1983-1998, is sorted chronologically. It contains materials related to the exhibitions that hosted the works of Wilkes faculty, specifically in the art department, held together in this separate subseries for convenience. Because of the many faculty art exhibitions hosted in the Sordoni Art Gallery, all materials have been placed in their own subseries for convenience. Materials include internal correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, condition reports, loan documents, photographs (including slides), catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.

Subseries III: Student / Alumni Exhibitions, 1982-1993

Subseries III: Student / Alumni Exhibitions, 1982-1993, is sorted chronologically. It contains materials related to the exhibitions that hosted the works of Wilkes students, seniors and alumni who were enrolled in the BA and BFA programs for the art major, held together in this separate subseries for convenience. Art majors participated in the exhibition for course credit. Because of the many faculty art exhibitions hosted in the Sordoni Art Gallery, all materials have been placed in their own subseries for convenience. Materials include internal correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, condition reports, loan documents, photographs, catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.

Subseries IV: Selections from the Permanent Collection, 1981-2003

Subseries IV: Selections from the Permanent Collection, 1981-2003, is sorted chronologically. This subseries contains materials for the various exhibitions that featured the works held within the Sordoni Art Gallery’s permanent collection, held in their separate subseries for convenience. Materials include internal correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, condition reports, loan documents, photographs (including film and slides), catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.

Subseries V: Scholastic Art Shows, 1979-1988

Subseries V: Scholastic Art Shows, 1979-1988, is sorted chronologically. This subseries contains the materials for the various regional scholastic art shows held by Wilkes that featured local high school students, and for the sake of convenience, they have been included together in their own series. Materials include internal and external correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, condition reports, loan documents, photographs, catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.

Series III: Sordoni Art Gallery Events, 1989-2003

Series III: Sordoni Art Gallery Events, 1989-2003, is sorted chronologically. This series contains materials related to some events organized and hosted by the Sordoni Art Gallery and events from external organizations that the Sordoni Art Gallery participated in. Materials include internal and external correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, photographs, catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.

Series IV: Cancelled Exhibitions and Events, 1986-1994

Series IV: Cancelled Exhibitions and Events, 1986-1994, is sorted chronologically and contains materials related to some initially planned events or projects that the Sordoni Art Gallery dropped out of participating, or events that were ultimately never held. Materials include internal and external correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, condition reports, loan documents, photographs (including slides), catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.

Series V: Maslow Collection, 1989-2002

Series V: Maslow Collection, 1989-2002, is sorted chronologically. It contains exhibition and administrative materials related to the Maslow family’s art collection, and due to the collection’s distinction, these materials have been placed in their own series for convenience. Materials include internal and external correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, condition reports, loan documents, photographs, catalogs, marketing materials, PR materials including newspaper articles, and event programs. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.

Series VI: Correspondence, 1984-1997

Series VI: Correspondence, 1984-1997, is sorted chronologically. It is a small series that includes correspondence with outside organizations, and contains no relation to other exhibitions or art collections. Materials include internal and external correspondence and memoranda, marketing materials, PR materials, and newsletters. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.

Series VII: Sordoni Art Gallery Admin/Development Files, 1994-2000

Series VII: Sordoni Art Gallery Admin/Development Files, 1994-2000, is sorted chronologically. This series contains various files and materials related to certain aspects of the administrative and developmental procedures of the Sordoni Art Gallery. Materials include internal correspondence and memoranda, financial documents, catalogs, marketing materials, and PR materials. Because of the sensitive nature of these materials, they are restricted.
